Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly came to us (via Bob Chapman at Graphitti) to design and letter the graphic novel prequels for his new movie Southland Tales. The painting for the first cover was already done, but the second and third were a fun opportunity to combine images and production graphics from the movie into something iconic that encapsulated each story (click on each to see some of the preliminary versions and elements we used).
Each issue also had a huge amount of additional material to provide backstory and introduce the characters and companies that drive the story. Even after having read them, the movie still looks like it's going to be quite a head trip, though. This Kelly fella is nothing if not ambitious!
For the collected edition cover at bottom, we put the final movie poster on the front, and extended the images with art from the comics to create a huge widescreen flag that wraps around the book.
